What's the Best WordPress SEO Plugin? 9 Plugins Tested for Real, Compared
Eight established WordPress SEO plugins, actually installed on a local WordPress site and explored one by one — onboarding, llms.txt, redirects, AI — the previous competitor disabled each time to test in isolation. And Livada SEO, honestly placed where it really stands: not the richest in features, but the only one that proves what it claims.
There are dozens of "best WordPress SEO plugins" roundups online. Most recycle the same table year after year, sometimes with products that no longer exist. While preparing this one, we ran into exactly that problem: Premium SEO Pack, still cited in many older comparisons, was permanently removed from WordPress.org on March 20, 2025 at its own publisher's request. It's absent here, replaced by a genuinely active, fast-growing challenger (SureRank, ~200,000 installs).
For this version we changed method: every plugin listed was actually installed, activated and explored on a test WordPress site (WordPress 7.1.2, PHP 8.3, a real environment with internet access), the previous competitor disabled each time to test in isolation. No relying on memory, no copy-pasted marketing page — dated screenshots to back it up.
Transparency: Livada.io publishes Livada SEO, one of the nine products in this comparison. We held it to the same method as the other eight — installed for real, with no active license, like a visitor who hasn't paid yet.
Short answer: the best WordPress SEO plugin depends on your need. Rank Math has the richest free tier and just made a real paid AI-visibility suite stable. AIOSEO has the most surprising find in this comparison: a free, no-account tool that queries 5 AI engines live. The SEO Framework stays the lightest and the only one to explicitly refuse to bolt on AI features without a demonstrated effect. Livada SEO — tested last, with no license — has neither Rank Math's catalog nor AIOSEO's install base, but remains the only one with dedicated proof screens (Migration Proof, Provenance Watch, NAP-consistency audit) rather than just measurement.

* What the plugin publishes for third-party AI agents and assistants (llms.txt, MCP, crawler controls) — not a Google ranking factor: Google officially clarified on June 15, 2026 that llms.txt has no effect, positive or negative, on Google Search ranking or visibility. "—" = no direct equivalent found in the publicly verified features as of September 29, 2026; that doesn't mean the plugin has no related capability, only that no public evidence of one turned up while testing it directly. † Intro price, renews at full price afterward (confirm on the vendor's own site). Why this table, not just another checkbox comparison: by 2026, almost every plugin on this list can check "AI" and "MCP" — Rank Math, AIOSEO, SEOPress and SureRank have invested heavily there this year. But tested for real, several claims don't hold up: neither Rank Math, nor AIOSEO, nor SEOPress actually generate an llms.txt, despite what's often assumed — of the 8 alternatives, only Yoast does it for free, Squirrly does it through a paid third-party service, and the other 6 have nothing. Livada SEO doesn't win on that exact ground either: full AEO sits behind its license. Its edge lies elsewhere, in three columns deliberately kept separate: configuring SEO, almost everyone can do that; automating it with AI, several can now do that too; actually verifying what's published, identifying which plugin or theme wrote a given tag, testing the effect of a fix before applying it, and proving a migration afterward — as far as we could verify, none of the other eight do that.
The 8 alternatives, one by one
Yoast SEO
The most installed and oldest plugin on the market, re-verified live on 09/29 (version 28.6). Its free tier covers the basics (meta, sitemap, simple schema) — and it's the only one of the 9 plugins tested that generates a real, free, automatic llms.txt, plus an aggregated schema endpoint (NLWeb). One nuance verified by reading its code (Llms_Txt_Cron_Scheduler): the file isn't served instantly on click, it's written by a WP-Cron job scheduled ~5 minutes after activation. Yoast Premium (€118.80/yr, 1 site) adds multiple keyword analysis and automatic redirects.
Rank Math
The richest free tier on the market: advanced schemas and content tools included at no cost, but a third-party account pushed right on the first activation screen (tested). Its AI Visibility (multi-engine citation tracking) went from beta to stable on September 22, 2026, now sold as a separate "Rank Math AI" tier (€4.99 to €15.99/mo depending on how many brands you track). Tested live: no llms.txt generator anywhere in the interface, despite what you might read elsewhere.
All in One SEO (AIOSEO)
100+ million cumulative downloads since 2007 (figure shown inside the plugin itself) and the most surprising find in this comparison: AI Suite → Keyword Reports, a free tool usable with no account, that queries five AI engines live in parallel (OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, Perplexity) for a given query and ranks the brands cited. AIOSEO also has a genuine self-service MCP screen (AI Suite → MCP) that registers its capabilities via the WordPress Abilities API — AIOSEO officially announced 28 abilities available as of version 4.9.8 (June 17, 2026); our test on September 29 showed only 13 in the admin interface, an unexplained gap worth re-checking — and generates ready-to-use config for Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Gemini CLI and ChatGPT. No llms.txt generator found in settings, despite an otherwise rich AI suite.
SEOPress
A lower entry price than Yoast or Rank Math ($49/yr), but tested live: no forced account, and no llms.txt either — generative AI here runs on paid credits only, no free AI feature found.
The SEO Framework
The lightest and most automatic — near-zero configuration, zero wizard, zero account, confirmed by testing it. Still no AEO/GEO feature anywhere in the interface: its only AI-related capability blocks AI crawlers rather than courting citations. Its Pro tier enforces a 2-site minimum, never a true 1-site plan.
Squirrly SEO (rebranded "GEO Plugin by Squirrly SEO")
A signup wall right at plugin activation itself (tested). An important correction versus what you'd assume from its marketing page alone: its llms.txt is not auto-generated. You have to build the content on a separate third-party service (app.crawlbrain.com, a separate account) and upload it manually into WordPress — without that upload, /llms.txt returns a 404. AI crawler controls (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot), on the other hand, do work from the free tier. The PRO tier ($9.99/mo) extends to 5 sites and 25 focus pages.
Slim SEO
A "zero settings" philosophy confirmed: auto-generated meta, sitemaps, JSON-LD, no manual configuration. Its AI-assisted meta generation runs on bring your own key (your own OpenAI, Gemini, Claude or OpenRouter key), no account to create — the only other plugin in this comparison, alongside Livada SEO, running on that model with zero vendor margin on AI. No llms.txt, no citation tracking. A Pro tier exists but still isn't publicly priced as of this writing.
SureRank
The cleanest onboarding of the 8 tested, with automatic detection of installed competitors to offer a migration. A real MCP server via the WordPress Abilities API, one click to enable. AI access (meta, schema generation) stays account-gated, like Rank Math and Squirrly. Pro tier at $99/yr the first year (10 sites), renewing at full price afterward — confirm on surerank.com before buying.
And Livada SEO?
Honestly: tested last and with no license, Livada SEO has neither Rank Math's free feature catalog nor AIOSEO's 100+ million cumulative downloads. On a classic checkbox table (schema, sitemap, redirects), it does the job without standing out much from the other eight. And tested without going easy on it, like the other eight: at the time of testing (09/29), its full AEO (llms.txt, Knowledge Graph) sat behind the license, exactly like Squirrly or SEOPress lock theirs — since then, that module went free (v1.53.10, 09/29/2026): /llms.txt is now served with no license required, and instantly, via a rewrite rule rather than a scheduled cron.
What stays free, with no account or API key, and has no equally actionable equivalent among the other eight (AIOSEO included, despite its own free AI tool): an "AI Visibility" checklist that explains, item by item, why a site isn't ready for AI engines (llms.txt, Knowledge Graph, business schema, E-E-A-T, FAQ), with a direct link to the setting that fixes it.
And its real difference isn't on that checklist — it's a question the other eight don't ask: when a plugin tells you a tag is in place or a migration succeeded, how do you actually know?
- Provenance Watch — on a site where a theme, Elementor and an SEO plugin can all write the same tag, identifies which one actually won, and which are in conflict.
- Prove Before Apply — tests the real effect of a fix (multiple real requests, compared) before recommending it, instead of leaving you to guess.
- Migration Proof — compares the entire
<head>before/after a migration from Yoast, Rank Math or SEOPress, line by line, with a dated diff. - NAP-consistency audit — scans the homepage JSON-LD and checks 8 fields (name, address, city, postal code, country, phone, URL, sameAs) against your settings, with a 0–100 score.
- A live public certificate — livada.fr's AI-readiness proof regenerates on every visit, never a frozen screenshot. Anyone can reload it and check it still holds up.
And an AI assistant (BYOK — Anthropic, OpenAI or Gemini, your own key) is included at no extra cost on every plan, including free, on the same model as Slim SEO — zero vendor margin on suggestions.
Which plugin to choose, by profile
You're starting out and want zero configuration: The SEO Framework or Slim SEO get the job done without requiring you to understand technical SEO.
You want the maximum free feature set, full stop: Rank Math is unbeatable on this exact criterion.
You run an agency with many sites on a tight budget: SureRank ($99/yr for 10 sites) or Rank Math Business are worth the math.
You want a free llms.txt with no hassle: Yoast (automatic, ~5 min after activation via cron) and Livada SEO (free as of 09/29/2026, served instantly) are the only two of the 9 that actually generate one for free with no license.
You want to test your site's AI visibility for free with no account: AIOSEO's Keyword Reports tool or Livada SEO's AI Visibility checklist are the only two with no signup wall.
You run a hotel, campsite or local business site: schema and NAP consistency matter more than a generic feature count — see our detailed guide to WordPress SEO plugins for hotels and campsites.
You're migrating a client site and need to prove nothing was lost: this is the one question where, as far as we could verify, Livada SEO has no direct equivalent in this comparison.
To go deeper on the three most common ones: Livada SEO vs Yoast, vs Rank Math, vs SEOPress.
None of these nine plugins is objectively "the best" for everyone — and being wary of any article that claims otherwise without nuance is part of choosing a tool well.

Yoast SEO, Rank Math, AIOSEO, SEOPress, SureRank, Squirrly SEO, The SEO Framework and Slim SEO: each installed, activated and explored directly on a test WordPress site (WordPress 7.1.2, PHP 8.3) on September 29, 2026, the previous competitor disabled before each new install for an isolated test. Livada SEO installed and tested under the same conditions, with no active license. AIOSEO's MCP-ability count (28 officially announced on 06/17/2026 vs. 13 observed in our 09/29/2026 test): an unresolved gap, flagged as such rather than arbitrarily settled. Dated screenshots available for each plugin. Premium SEO Pack excluded, confirmed removed from WordPress.org on 03/20/2025. Slim SEO Pro pricing wasn't publicly listed as of the verification date — don't treat it as settled without re-checking the vendor's own site. All names and trademarks mentioned belong to their respective owners.
